The Jung Center presents Virtue and Vice in Narnia and Middle-earth.
Explore the practical lessons in the magical worlds of J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis.
The Lord of the Rings and The Chronices of Narnia embody a rich understanding of virtue and vice as displayed in the choices and journeys of the human and mythical characters in these classic stories.
In this lecture series, we will explore how Lewis and Tolkien give dramatic shape and force to the four classical virtues (courage, temperance, wisdom, justice), the three theological virtues (faith, hope, love), and the nature of evil.
Louis Markos, Professor in English and Scholar in Residence at Houston Baptist University, holds the Robert H. Ray Chair in Humanities.
He is the author of On the Shoulders of Hobbits: The Road to Virtue with Tolkien and Lewis, From Achilles to Christ, Pressing Forward: Alfred, Lord Tennyson and the Victorian Age, Literature: A Student’s Guide, and The Eye of the Beholder.
