Jung Center of Houston offers Surrealist Exercises for Creative Exploration.
Using Andre Breton’s (and other known Surrealist and Dadaist artist’s) automatic writing and drawing techniques, we will explore the relationship the imagination and the subconscious can have on creative techniques.
Through the studying of artists across disciplines such as visual art, writing, theater, and dance, combined with Breton’s Surrealist Manifesto and other writings regarding automatism, we will create our own works that blur the boundaries between the unconscious and the conscious, to see what new and unexpected creative possibilities emerge.
We will then discuss the work together to see what greater understandings of such work arise through the feedback of others. No creative experience necessary.
Addie Tsai’s work has been published in anthologies and literary magazines. She co-conceived Victor Frankenstein, and collaborated on Camille Claudel with Dominic Walsh Dance Theater. Her photography was exhibited with Fotofest.
Tsai holds an MFA from Warren Wilson College. She teaches at Houston Community College. She is currently a PhD student in Texas Woman’s University’s Dance Studies Program.
