The exhibition opens at 11:00am on Saturday, September 10, 2016 and is followed by a conversation with the artist at 4:00pm and reception for the artist from 5:00 to 8:00pm. The exhibition continues through Saturday, October 15, 2016.
Just as stick figures, glyphs, paintings, and photography are images that guide people through cultures and civilizations of all periods, Robert Kinsell views his work in a parallel context—as “blazes” of a particular path through time and space.
In his exhibition, Blazes in the Desert, Kinsell chooses to work in a strongly illusionistic manner for two particular reasons. He feels that his work should be accessible, on some level, with anyone who may care to engage with it. Additionally, on a more personal level, Kinsell appreciates the duplicity of convincing the viewer that what they are looking at—colored smears on fabric—is actually a wall or a landscape or a three-dimensional object.
The Northern Chihuahuan Desert, where Kinsell resides, has long been a place of solitude, beauty, and balance. However, it has also become a place of daunting challenges, with recent industrialization and the confiscation of ranchers’ and land owners’ properties disturbing the equilibrium of the area. Thus, the images in this exhibition represent blazes for a path that may soon be eliminated.
Robert Kinsell studied painting at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, WI. He served as Professor of Art at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, TX from 1988 to 2013, when he retired. This year, he was a part of the Hunting Prize Finalists Exhibition in Houston and the Texas National group exhibition in Nacogdoches, TX. Selected public collections of his work include Continental Airlines, Paris, France; Citizens Fidelity Bank, Louisville, KY; and Harrison-Brewster Insurance Co. Inc., Chicago, IL. Kinsell’s work is also included in numerous private collections.
Blazes in the Desert will continue through Saturday, October 15, 2016.
