ordinary elephant is a husband and wife duo, whose appreciation for folk, bluegrass, Americana, and alternative rock can be heard in their original acoustic music. Guitar and vocal harmonies support a strong lyric foundation, and clawhammer banjo rounds out their sound, providing texture and dynamics.
ordinary elephant recorded their debut album, dusty words & cardboard boxes, at White Cat Studios with Houston-based producer Jack Saunders in 2013. Jack’s wealth of recording experience and musicianship underscores ordinary elephant’s songwriting craftsmanship. This album caught the attention of the Academy of Texas Music, who nominated ordinary elephant for Vocal Duo of the Year at the 2014 Texas Music Awards.
Music Doing Good, a non-profit organization which helps children through music, named ordinary elephant the winner of their first annual songwriting contest held at the end of 2013. ordinary elephant performed their winning song “The Great Migration” at Anderson Fair during a Music Doing Good benefit show.
“Listening to ordinary elephant live was a real treat. Tight harmonies, solid songwriting, and an overall musical experience comparable to the best of T Bone Burnett,” said Ray Younkin for Music Doing Good.
Since their debut album, ordinary elephant has continued to hone their songwriting, crafting songs that will find their way onto a second album. These new songs afforded them the opportunity to participate in the annual Songwriter Serenade competition held in Moravia, TX in 2015.
ordinary elephant began their musical journey in Houston, TX, enjoying its diverse music community for several years prior to departing in 2014 to take on a nomadic lifestyle. They are currently traveling the country in their motorhome, Millie, with their dogs.
