Directed by Jon Schwartz
2015
USA, 57 minutes
Introduced by Jon Schwartz.
In his latest film essay, Jon Schwartz (This Is Our Home, It Is Not for Sale and Seymour Schwartz: Home Movie) showcases the astonishing life and career of native Houstonian Gertrude Barnstone (born 1925).
He details her youthful beginnings as an artist, her stint as an actress in the 1940s, her pioneering liberal influence on the Houston Independent School District, and her marriage to architect Howard Barnstone.
The film was shot by noted photographer Arthur Meyerson.
“San Jacinto High School alumnus, Rice University graduate, and sculptor Gertrude Barnstone has been blazing trails for more than [50] years. She helped lead the way in the desegregation of Houston schools in the 1960s and a decade later served as president and treasurer of the Texas ACLU Foundation board. She also co-founded the now defunct Houstonians for Global Warming Action and the Artist Rescue Mission.” —Houston Chronicle
Gertrude Barnstone and Arthur Meyerson join filmmaker Jon Schwartz in a post-film discussion.
