The Third Man
Directed by Carol Reed
1949, UK, B/W
93 minutes, DCP
Often listed among the greatest films of all time, Carol Reed’s film noir set in postwar Vienna is a moody, atmospheric triumph filled with magnificent performances.
Writer Holly Martins (Joseph Cotten) smells something suspicious in the accidental death of his friend Harry Lime (the legendary Orson Welles, whose centennial is being celebrated this year) but finds his investigation blocked on all sides.
Tensions rise as secrets are revealed and Lime’s girlfriend Anna (Alida Valli) becomes involved.
Novelist Graham Greene wrote the screenplay which Robert Ebert claimed, “most completely embodies the romance of going to the movies.”
Restored in 4K by Deluxe, England, on behalf of Studiocanal, from a fine grain master positive struck from the original negative. A 2015 Cannes Classics Selection.
