In a small Castilian village in 1940, in the wake of Spain’s devastating civil war, a little girl named Ana attends a traveling movie show of Frankenstein and becomes obsessed by the monster. While her parents and sister are distracted by other concerns, Ana becomes consumed by her imagination and has an encounter with a fugitive soldier.
Widely regarded as the greatest Spanish film of the 1970s, The Spirit of the Beehive is a bewitching portrait of a child’s haunted inner life and one of the most visually arresting movies ever made.
“Those who haven’t seen it since the 1970s may find themselves amazed all over again by its lyrical potency and grace; those who have never seen it may wonder how it can be that a film this great isn’t shown somewhere all the time.” —Detroit Free Press
