McGonigel’s Mucky Duck presents Josh Grider at 9:30 p.m. Friday, November 20, 2015.
Josh Grider knows two things: he loves writing songs and he loves playing them for people. From San Francisco to New York City, and a whole lot of places in between, Josh has been delivering the goods at a clip of about 200 shows a year since the release of his first album in 2005. Five years, two more full-length albums, and one EP later, Josh is still going strong with no signs of slowing down.
The native New Mexican, and current Tennessean, has a musical palate as big as the Southwestern skies he grew up under. Josh’s background is built on a bedrock of stone cold country, the kind played by guys known on a one name basis: Willie, Merle, Waylon, Cash, Buck, Roger.
This foundation of storytelling, direct lyricism, and Josh’s unmistakable baritone voice are constant in Josh’s songs. However, his musical and writing style has been colored by many genres and audiences are often surprised by how fluidly he can move from folk to funky, to bluegrass to jazz, to country to rock. This admittedly schizophrenic style has earned Josh a comparison–Dave Matthews meets Merle Haggard.
