Jung Center of Houston presents the exhibition Joan Laughlin: The Forest and the Trees . On view in the Main Gallery September 3-29. Opening Reception September 5, 5-7 pm.
Joan Laughlin uses the forms and lines found in the natural world to make paintings that hover between realism and abstraction. This vacillation mirrors our tenuous, often conflicted, relationship with Nature.
THE ARTIST WRITES:
For most of my life, I have lived in Houston, Texas, a place that has been described as a swamp covered with concrete. The native weeds and flora and fauna that grow out of concrete cracks and over and beside driveways and sidewalks provide inspiration not only for my recent paintings but for my life.
"We have to stumble through so much dirt and humbug before we reach home. And we have no one to guide us. Our only guide is homesickness." Herman Hesse
