Anderson Fair presents Cosy Sheridan.
Cosy first caught the attention of national folk audiences in 1992 when she won the New Folk songwriting contest at The Kerrville Folk Festival and the Troubadour Award at The Telluride Bluegrass Festival, and released her critically acclaimed CD “Quietly Led” on Waterbug Records. The Boston Globe wrote “She is now being called one of the best new singer/songwriters.”
She has been on the road ever since playing clubs, concert halls and coffeehouses from Seattle to Berkeley and across I-80 to Omaha, Chicago and then to Boston where she now makes her home. She has played houseconcerts in Iowa and to a full house at Carnegie Hall. On her new CD she writes of these years on the road in the song Woody Guthrie Watch Over Me.
Her 2014 release, Pretty Bird, was chosen as one of Sing Out Magazine’s “Great CDs of 2014.” The title song charted in the Top 100 Songs of 2014 on the “Folk DJ” list. West Side Folk dubbed her “one of the era’s finest and most thoughtful songwriters.”
In the past 12 months she has been featured as a showcase artist at the Northeastern Regional Folk Conference and the Southeastern Regional Folk Conference. She was voted the Best Artist of 2014 by WVBR radio’s Bound For Glory fans.
Cosy has the gift of taking deeply felt experiences from her own life and weaving them into finely crafted, musical tapestries which connect the personal to universal, and invite us to a deeper experience of our own lives.
Known for her modern interpretations of myth, the first song on the new CD, Eurydice Goodnight, is a goodbye to her home in the American southwest and parallels the story of Orpheus’ and his lost wife with saying goodbye to a beloved landscape.
The second track, I Am Your Landlord is a tip of the hat to the Texas swing of Asleep At The Wheel and The Austin Lounge Lizards and includes a full horn section. The bass line is driven by Cosy’s bluesy percussive guitar style which is the bedrock for all of her songs. A former student of luminaries such as Guy Van Duser and Eric Schoenberg, she has been called one of the best women guitarists on the acoustic scene.
For the past 20 years she has taught classes in songwriting, performance and guitar at workshops and adult music camps across the country at such camps as the Puget Sound Guitar Workshop and The Swannanoa Gathering. In 2008 she co-founded the Moab Folk Camp in Moab Utah.
“Her user-friendly musical philosophy sets her happily apart from the myopic, self-involved songwriters…She is a wonderfully lively, very funny and enormously amiable entertainer with a keen and wicked eye for the excesses of our fast-food, tv-happy and noisome culture.” – The Boston Globe
“A buddhist monk in a 12-step program trapped in the body of a singer/songwriter.” – The Albuquerque Journal
“Sheridan is frank, feisty, sublimely and devilishly funny. She fuses myth with modern culture, Persephone with Botox.” – Cornell Folksong Society.
