It’s been nearly 100 years since Marcel Duchamp entered his signed urinal (Fountain, 1917) into the members’ exhibition of the Society of Independent Artists, New York, and art has just gotten more riotous.
This moving image journey is one part “laugh therapy” session and one part art history lesson, thumbing through the pages of art comedy’s greatest hits, from Marcel Duchamp and Alfred Jarry to Hennessy Youngman and Charlie Hebdo, with special interludes by Andy Kaufman, Lily Tomlin, and other comic legends.
But seriously folks, this film program will elucidate the historical power of satire, parody, caricature and nonsense in art, and the underlying psychology of humor.
