Anderson Fair presents Combo Plate Showcase w/ Raina Rose, Anna Tivel, Nels Andrew.

As the second daughter of a country music historian and a Jewish poet, Americana musician and songwriter Raina Rose (pictured) revels in sharing with you her beautifully twisted, yet refreshingly optimistic perspective on the world.

Her unique voice and exceptional guitar playing transcend age, gender, generation, and even catch the ears of those who aren’t typically into acoustic guitar-driven songwriting. With a naturalist’s eye, an artist’s pen, and a lion’s attack, Raina lays everything she has on the line; she makes you feel as if she’s your best friend whispering a honeysuckle-sweet secret in your ear, warmly inviting you into a joyfully intimate and darkly candid conversation. It’s that ability to forge her own path in the world of music that sets Raina apart from her contemporaries, and her no holds barred, lay it on the line brand of Americana that secures Raina’s place in music history as more than a mere footnote or a passing trend.

Between her big voice, with its unusual blend of twang and jazziness, and her whimsical sense of storytelling, Rose is definitely not just another boring indie folk songstress.

Anna Tivel has spent some quality hours in a dodge caravan repeating lyrical lines over and over until the words fall in time with the windshield wipers, or until the gas light comes on.

A nationally touring artist with a deep love of quiet stories, Anna is beginning to carve a place for herself in the songwriting world. She was a winner at this year’s Kerrville Songwriting Contest, and has shared the stage with heroes and friends across the country.

Anna was raised in the forest and farmland of rural northern Washington and currently calls Portland, OR home. Her songs reflect both the stark colors of small town life, and the hard, sharp lines of the city. Anna’s album, Before Machines, was hailed by No Depression as “raw, yet superbly composed and executed, intelligent, personal and deeply expressive.”

Nels Andrews is a folk singer based in Brooklyn, New York. Known primarily as a folk singer, few know of his apprenticeship with cult blues icon Washboard Williams.

In 2002, Andrews was selected as a winner in the prestigious New Folk Competition at the annual Kerrville Folk Festival in Kerrville, Texas. Past winners of this coveted award include, Eric Taylor, Steve Earle, Nanci Griffith, Lyle Lovett and Slaid Cleaves.

In 2006, Nels was selected as the winner of the Telluride Bluegrass Festival’s Troubadour Competition In August 2006, Nels was selected as a winner of the Mountain Stage New Song Competition. Nels Andrews’ debut full-length recording, Sunday Shoes rose to Number 1 on the UK Americana Chart, and finished the year ranked Number 4 on the Euro Americana Chart’s Top 20 albums of 2004. Andrews frequently appears in concert with AJ Roach. The two have toured together in the United States and Europe in late 2006.
