Breaking Pattern: Juergen Strunck & Jon Vogt (PrintHouston 2015)

German-born, internationally recognized Juergen Strunck meticulously crafts vibrant works on paper that are a confluence of relief printing and chine collé, resulting in an optically striking series of works.

Strunck’s linearly symmetrical prints begin with what is called a “rainbow roll”, a smooth gradient of multiple colors, which he prints onto Japanese paper, cuts into geometric shapes, and attaches to black cotton paper via chine collé. The resulting push and pull between the foreground’s dynamic colors and the flat black background creates a resonance within each piece that conjures a sublimely engaging experience.

Juergen Strunck has been featured in over 80 solo exhibitions, and has been included in more than 675 group exhibitions in the United States and abroad. Strunck’s work can be found in over one hundred museums and institutions, including the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York City, New York; the Library of Congress, Washington D.C.; the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, Fort Worth, Texas; The Baltimore Museum of Art, Baltimore, Maryland; the Dallas Museum of Art, Dallas, Texas; California Palace of the Legion of Honor, San Francisco, California; Museu Nacional de Belas Artes, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; and the Museum of Contemporary Graphic Art, Fredrikstad, Norway.

Recent MFA graduate Jon Vogt integrates traditional practices of printmaking with digital tools, experimenting with a crossbreeding of technologies to ultimately construct collaged relief and screen prints of non-objective patterns.

Vogt’s prints become an amalgam of colorful intersecting lines and blurred black and white rectangles, retaining a distinct rhythm and emitting optical vibrations of intense visual noise. Considering these compositions to be “patterns of interference”, the artist pushes his series of prints to find the extent at which a static image can appear to move, and to deliberate the line where repetition can be either hypnotic or bewildering.

Jon Vogt received his MFA in Printmaking this spring from the University of North Texas, Denton, Texas, after earning a BFA in Studio Art from Iowa State University, as well as a Professional Printer Certificate from the prestigious Tamarind Institute for Lithography in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Vogt has exhibited in numerous group exhibitions throughout Texas and the United States, and his work can be found in the Permanent Collection of the University of North Texas.
