Houston Jazz singer Raquel Cepeda will be receiving and presenting Brazilian pianist Marvio Ciribelli who visits from Rio de Janeiro for a concert in Houston on May 27 at the Cullen Hall at the University of St. Thomas.

The concert, Brazil Samba Jazz will be featuring pieces of the Brazilian jazz repertoire, sambas and bossa novas, with arrangements by Marvio Ciribelli and with Raquel Cepeda in the vocals.

The repertoire includes songs from Tom Jobim, Baden Powell, Roberto Menescal and Marcos Valle, among others, with original jazz arrangements that infuse these songs with Marvio’s unique contemporary and energizing style. The repertoire will also include original bossa nova compositions from both Marvio and from Raquel.

The show is the result of the international collaboration of these two artists who recently presented the show at the legendary Beco das Garrafas in Rio de Janeiro. Now they are bringing the show to Houston.

Pianist and composer Marvio Ciribelli is originally from Rio de Janeiro and has more than 15 CDs recorded, has participated 4 times in the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, has toured around the US, Europe and Asia, and has played and recorded with important Brazilian and international artists, including Brazilian composer Marcos Valle, Brazilian singers Thais Motta and Bibi Ferreira and the Dutch group Focus, among others.

Raquel Cepeda, Houston-based Venezuelan jazz singer, has recorded two CDs and has participated as a guest artist in other US and international recording projects, including the CD “The Fountainhead” by American trumpet player Kenneth Easton, “Aldemaro Romero Songbook” by Venezuelan sax player Luis Serrano, and will also appear as a guest artist in Marvio’s most recent CD, “Vogue Samba Jazz”. Raquel was the winner of the Urban Voice at the Ucevista Voice Festival in Venezuela in 1995, writes original compositions, and has sang with important jazz figures like the legendary American pianist Ellis Marsalis.

Raquel and Marvio will be accompanied by other prominent Brazilian musicians as part of the concert’s band, the internationally recognized percussionist Cassio Duarte, bassist and guitarist Adalberto Miranda, and as a special guest, the violinist Ingrid Hunter.

Cassio Duarte is based in Houston. He has recorded and toured with important Brazilian artists like Gal Costa, Djavan and Sergio Mendes, and has participated in recognized recording projects including “A Twist of Marley” and the soundtrack of the movie “Woman on Top”, among others.

Adalberto Miranda, who lives in Brazil, is part of Marvio Ciribelli’s band, and works with other important artists like Gilberto Gil and the Cambapé Instrumental and Trieto groups.

Ingrid Hunter, who will join them as a special guest, lives in Houston, is a classical violinist and educator at the University of St. Thomas and St. Jacinto College, and is also part of Houstonian classical ensembles Musiqa and the Mercury Orchestra.

The Brazil Samba Jazz concert counts with the support of cultural organizations Flamart, Brazilian Arts Foundation, and the music department at St. Thomas University.
