McGonigel’s Mucky Duck presents the third annual Playing for Their Supper, featuring Brant Croucher, at 7 p.m. Thursday, November 19, 2015.

Also performing is Grifters & Shills (John and Rebecca Stoll).

Houston native Croucher, whose 11-track Americana album, Under the Blanco Lights – an ambitious, eclectic representation of Croucher’s vast musical interests and influences – was released last year, performs folk-inspired acoustic songs, swampy groove-driven tunes, toe-tapping country numbers, and  thoughtful, piano-driven ballads.

Croucher went to school in Denton, Texas and has since spent time living in Dallas, Nashville, Austin, and Wimberley.

Appropriately, the album’s songs explore themes of moving around — and moving on — while finding a way to make life as an aspirant troubadour work.

Houston band Grifters & Shills writes and performs timeless music with deep ties to the past and a very assertive outlook on the present. Featuring tight vocal harmonies, guitar, banjo, percussion, harmonica, and bass, Grifters & Shills epitomizes the modern take on classic roots music.

In 2014, Grifters & Shills released their debut full-length album, Watershed, which guides listeners through a unique and thorough journey of roots music set in the modern day. This new album is the much-anticipated follow-up to their EP Trainwreck Junkyard.

Playing for Their Supper was started by Brant Croucher in 2012 as a way to give back to the community each November in the spirit of the Thanksgiving Holiday. This year’s proceeds will benefit Wesley Community Center’s senior citizen food program.

Each day, Wesley provides 60-70 senior citizens – a group of people who are generally on a fixed income – a healthy breakfast and lunch at no cost to the recipient. The goal with this benefit is to underwrite 500 daily meals.
