Da Camera of Houston presents Romantic Titans: Beethoven Symphony No. 5 and Liszt; Yury Martynov, piano in conjunction with its Beethoven Perspectives Series. Tuesday, October 13, 2015, at 7:30 PM at The Menil Collection.
The composer and the piano virtuoso were heroic figures of the Romantic era; Franz Liszt was the rock star of his day, inspiring “Lisztomania” among his adoring fans.
Lizst made monumental transcriptions of the symphonies of another Romantic hero, Beethoven.
Russian pianist Yury Martynov (pictured) is garnering international attention for his recordings of these transcriptions. In his Da Camera debut, Martynov plays Beethoven’s ultra-Romantic Symphony No. 5.
“Listening to these stunning accounts by the Russian pianist Yury Martynov, it’s difficult to believe at times that only two hands are playing…Martynov never fails to play with admirable warmth and imagination.” – BBC Music Magazine
