The Menil Collection presents Exhibiting and Curating Self-Taught Art.
As part of Authentic Raw & True, Menil curator Michelle White (pictured) moderates a panel discussion exploring the role of museums in shaping conceptions of and conversations about self-taught art with Lee Kogan, curator emerita, American Folk Art Museum, New York; Matthew Higgs, director of the art space White Columns, New York; and other special guests.
Co-presented with the Orange Show Center for Visionary Art.
In conjunction with the exhibition As Essential As Dreams: Self-Taught Art from the Collection of Stephanie and John Smither.
Authentic, Raw and True: A Weekend Celebrating Visionary and Self-Taught Artists
Smither Park, the Orange Show, the Beer Can House, and the Menil Collection host a series of concerts, readings, and other performances.
This four-day celebration features panel discussions, the grand opening of Smither Park, a self-taught artist market, performances, music, tours, and much more!
This is the inaugural year of what we hope to be an annual event. Come celebrate visionary and self-taught art, and the artist in us all!
