Italy’s official Oscar entry for Best Foreign Language Film!

Winner of the Golden Bear at the 2016 Berlin International Film Festival, this film is one of the most compelling documentaries of the past year.

For years, the Italian island of Lampedusa has been the destination of men, women, and children making the perilous journey across the Mediterranean from Africa, fleeing conflicts, famine, and drought. Gianfranco Rosi’s (El Sicario; Room 164) observational approach chronicles the unlikely coexistence of recently arrived refugees with the island’s residents.

“Not investigative journalism, it is a deeply contemplative, carefully constructed record of events as they occur. Rosi allows audiences to make up their own minds about what they are seeing. The two realities are kept mostly separate, the former quiet and quotidian, the latter dramatic and emotional.

Amidst global refugee crises, Fire at Sea (Fuocoammare) is a magnificent intercession by a filmmaker who points no fingers, nor sets out to analyze the reasons why.” – 2016 Toronto International Film Festival
