In celebration of Kirk Douglas’s centennial, MFAH Films screens the film in which he starred that is among his favorites.

Also starring Gena Rowlands and Walter Matthau, this black-and-white Western classic features Douglas as a ferociously autonomous cowboy who plans to break a friend out of jail by getting himself incarcerated in the same facility.

Dalton Trumbo’s screenplay is concerned with the virtues of freedom and individuality, a pertinent theme for him as he was blacklisted during the notorious HUAC hearings.

Lonely Are the Brave had its world premiere in Houston.
