On Tuesday, January 31, 2017, the Elias String Quartet returns to the Menil Collection following an exhilarating Da Camera debut during the 2015¬–16 season.
Praised for intense and vibrant performances, the London-based, internationally acclaimed ensemble consists of Marie Bitlloch, cello; Sara Bitlloch, violin; Donald Grant, violin; and Martin Saving, viola.
“The Elias String Quartet so captivated Da Camera’s audiences last season that we immediately reengaged the group for the 2016–17 lineup,” said Sarah Rothenberg, Da Camera Artistic and General Director. “This remarkably talented ensemble returns with another perspective on a subject they know inside and out: Beethoven’s string quartets.”
For their Houston performance, the Elias String Quartet explores life after Beethoven from a string quartet’s point of view. Their concert, In Beethoven’s Footsteps, examines how Brahm’s lyrical A Minor Quartet and Bartok’s dramatic Quartet No. 4 are firmly rooted in Beethoven’s works.
The concert also includes Beethoven’s Quartet in F Minor, Op. 95.
The “After Beethoven” project, which ties into Da Camera’s season theme of “Roots,” follows the ensemble’s ambitious “Beethoven Project,” in which they presented the complete Beethoven String Quartets as a cycle in various formats in venues across the UK and internationally over four years.
Da Camera’s chamber music series continues with the inaugural James K. Schooler Memorial Concert featuring Christian Tetzlaff and Lars Vogt on Thursday, February 16, 2017, and the Horszowski Trio on Tuesday, February 21, 2017.
