The Menil Collection presents Trevor Stark on Picasso.
In the summer of 1910, in the Spanish fishing town of Cadaqués, Pablo Picasso reduced his drawing practice to a limited toolkit of visual signs: a linear framework, half-moon curves, and schematic shading. This work has provided a convenient hinge in narratives of Picasso’s relationship to abstraction.
Trevor Stark, a postdoctoral fellow at Columbia University, examines the connections between these works and the newspaper collages the artist began in the winter of 1912.
In conjunction with the exhibition Picasso The Line on view at Menil Collection through January 8, 2017.
