Sculpture Month Houston: Beneath The Surface: Meredith Jack & Devon Christopher Moore + New Beginnings: Grace Phillips

Nicole Longnecker Gallery celebrates Sculpture Month Houston with two concurrent exhibitions: Beneath The Surface featuring new work from both Meredith Jack and Devon Christopher Moore, and New Beginnings with Grace Phillips. The exhibits open Saturday, October 22, 2016 with an artists’ reception from 5pm – 8pm and run through November 23, 2016.

Beneath The Surface, featuring newly completed work exploring the breadth of the world of sculpture.

Meredith Jack draws on a long career of creating abstract objects that belie their inherent physical weight by suggesting clues to a lighter ethereal place. Devon Christopher Moore’s return to the gallery brings an extension of his segmented, folded and abraded shape series. The art is refined, despite being dissected and reassembled, and softer to the eye. Two artists, two disciplines, both illustrating imaginary places.

New Beginnings involves new work from Grace Phillips. Primarily a printmaker, Phillips has begun adding volume to her work while simultaneously adding dense pigmentation. The results are powerful visual statements within a diaphanous construction. Dark and moody, the sculptures invite the viewer to come closer to find the message within.

“I’m extremely proud to show these three artists during Sculpture Month,” said gallerist Nicole Longnecker. “The work and the artists’ processes are all different, yet have a common bond found in all art: the creativity and imagination of the artist.”

MEREDITH JACK: Born in Kansas in 1943 Jack graduated from the University of?Kansas in 1967 with an emphasis in Printmaking. As a graduate student at Tyler School of Art, in Philadelphia, PA he found his interests were in three dimensional areas and received his Master of Fine Arts degree in Sculpture. In 1976 he relocated to Houston, Texas, before becoming a professor at Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas, where he is now Emeritus Professor of Sculpture.?

DEVON CHRISTOPHER MOORE: A Texas-based artist, Moore’s work on plates of steel have a growing list of collectors. Meticulous in his process, he has a reputation for creating new processes to deliver his artistic message. Moore works from his studio in the Houston Heights, where he also lives with his wife and daughter.

GRACE PHILLIPS: Grace Phillips is a visual artist who lives and works in Houston, Texas.  She creates in a variety of media, including?painting, drawing, collage, sculpture, printmaking and mixed-media installations. She studied art at University of Houston and the Glassell Studio School of the Museum of Fine Arts. For 17 years she lived in the Middle East, first in Dammam, Saudi Arabia and then in Dubai, United Arab Emirates before relocating to Houston in 2011.
