The Menil Collection and Houston Grand Opera present Houston Grand Opera Song Cycle on the Magnificent Pretty Boy, Henry Ray Clark.
A workshop presentation of a new dramatic song cycle based on a true Houston story about the redemptive power of art, brought to life by the unique bluegrass and folk-tinged sound of the Grant Wallace Band (pictured).
Co-presented by Houston Grand Opera’s HGOco and The Menil Collection in conjunction with the exhibition As Essential As Dreams: Self-Taught Art from the Collection of Stephanie and John Smither.
Houston folk and outsider artist Henry Ray Clark (1936-2006) was a street hustler known as the “Magnificent Pretty Boy.” While serving time in Huntsville State Prison, he discovered his natural talent for visual art through the prison arts program.
Clark’s colorful, extremely detailed drawings often featuring otherworldly images and creatures evoke a unique sensibility and artistic vision, identifying him as a true outsider artist, unaffected by the influence of mainstream culture and motivated by a deeply personal urge to create.
He was quoted as saying “I am never imprisoned as long as I can draw.”
