MFAH Film Series – Armchair Travel: Old Master Exhibition on Screen – Rembrandt (Thursday & Sunday)

Museum of Fine Arts, Houston presents an MFAH Film Series – Armchair Travel: Old Master Exhibition on Screen.

This summer, marvel, and delight at the work of six of the greatest painters in the history of art in the comfort of Brown Auditorium Theate r— Rembrandt, Goya, Vermeer, Munch, Matisse, and Renoir.

Produced by London-based Exhibition on Screen, these films feature blockbuster art exhibitions from galleries in Europe and the USA. Each film explores the process of putting the exhibition together, the exhibition’s key works, commentary and interviews with curators and leading art historians, and a revealing biography of the artist.

Every Rembrandt exhibition is eagerly anticipated, but Rembrandt: The Late Works, hosted in 2014 and 2015 by London’s National Gallery and Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum, was an event like no other.

Given exclusive, privileged access to both venues, the filmmakers document the landmark exhibition while interweaving Rembrandt’s life story with the behind-the-scenes preparations at these world-famous institutions.

The exhibition focuses on highlights from the final years of Rembrandt’s life, commonly thought to be his finest years. The masterpieces he produced during this period could be called his defining works, with pieces so soulful and honest that they helped sculpt the prevailing perceptions of Rembrandt as a man and as an artist.

The film explores the exhibition’s key works through contributions from specially invited guests, including curators and leading art historians. For many, Rembrandt is the greatest artist who ever lived. This documentary seeks to explore the truth about the man behind the legend.
