McGonigel’s Mucky Duck presents Libby Koch.

“Too country for country radio, Koch these days would get filed under folk, the same place you find too country for country folks such as Lucinda Williams. That’s country’s loss.” (Houston Chronicle)

Seventh generation Texan and Berkalin Records recording artist Libby Koch is an Americana singer-songwriter based in Houston. Libby’s music draws from a classic Americana blend of country, folk, and rock, with influences from great artists such as Emmylou Harris, Lucinda Williams, Janis Joplin, Patty Griffin, Gillian Welch, and Dolly Parton. Her goal is to make real, honest music that resonates with people.

In 2014, Libby released her fourth studio release, Tennessee Colony, an album about faith, family, and home. She has toured extensively in support of the new record, playing shows at venues, festivals, conferences, private parties, weddings, and house concerts in 22 states and Canada in the past year alone.

This year she played the Kerrville Folk Festival’s Threadgill Theater, the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival’s Emerging Artist Showcase, the Northeast Regional Folk Alliance (NERFA) conference Suzi Wollenberg Folk DJ Showcase and Quad Showcase, WFMT’s Folkstage program in Chicago, the Frank Brown International Songwriters’ Festival, and she was a Wildflower! Festival Finalist and Songwriter Serenade Semifinalist. In 2013 Libby was named Songwriter of the Year by the Houston Press, and she was an Official Showcase Artist at the Southwest Regional Folk Alliance (SWRFA) conference.

Libby plays shows (1) with the full Libby Koch Band, (2) as a rootsier Black Keys style duo with drummer Joe Devadanam, and (3) solo acoustic. She’s opened for artists such as Rodney Crowell, Robert Earl Keen, Hayes Carll, Charlie Robison, Bonnie Bishop, Django Walker, Wood & Wire, The Departed, Andrew Duhon, Gary P. Nunn, The Trishas, Kevin Fowler, The Derailers, and Lorrie Morgan.

Libby has four solo releases under her belt: Tennessee Colony, which was released by Berkalin Records (Matt Harlan, Curtis McMurtry, Brian Kalinec) in April 2014, The Shadow of This Town, which was released by Nashtex Records in 2010, the 2009 full-length album Redemption, and the 2008 EP, The Barn Burner EP. Libby’s band, The Grievous Angels, a side project with songwriters Lainey Balagia and Debbie Forrest, released an album in 2013, which earned the trio a Houston Press Music Award and a Texas Music Award.

Produced by Jack Saunders and mastered by Jerry Tubb, Tennessee Colony features performances by Texas musicians Susan Gibson (writer of Wide Open Spaces), Allen Huff (Roger Creager), Sarah Golden (NBC’s The Voice), Eleanor Whitmore (The Mastersons), Wood & Wire, Rick Richards (Ray Wylie Hubbard), Riley Osbourn (The Lost Gonzo Band), and Lloyd Maines. The album was named “CD of the Week” on June 21, 2014 by Rich Warren, host of the nationally syndicated “Midnight Special” show on WFMT in Chicago.
