Instute of Hispanic Culture, Consulate General Republic of Indonesia Houston, Texas, Ministry of Education and Culture Republic of Indonesia present a Hanafi Muhammad Art Exhibition, When the Portuguese and the Spanish left: Story of the Spices.
In this exhibition, Hanafi explores what it feels like to witness the arrival of the Portuguese and the Spanish in Indonesia for the spices, and the impact it had on Indonesia’s economic and political dynamics.
However, trying to recall that time is now difficult because the only things that are remembered are the fear and the sadness. Now, it’s easier and more logical to voice humanitarian and anti-war sentiments seeing how Indonesia is walking hand in hand with a love for peace, an acculturation through marriages, and even the Portuguese and Spanish names that are left behind.
Hanafi is considered an important figure of Abstract painting in Indonesia. He was among the ten best in the Phillip Morris Indonesia Art Awards 1997, a finalist in the Indofood Art Awards 2002 and 2003, and has held exhibitions in, London, Canada, Spain, Japan, Singapore. He has participated in over 80 art exhibitions including Saatchi Gallery in London, Museum of Girona in Spain and The National Gallery of Art in Jakarta which was attended by 8,000 people in March of 2016.
The Art exhibition is open during the weekdays
