“Wendy Colonna is not just a singer-songwriter. . . she’s a force of Nature” -Austin American Statesman
Austin-based Wendy Colonna’s new release, Nectar, invites listeners to taste the sweetness of life in stories of surrender, mortality and redemption. With her swamp-Americana style, Colonna displays grit, grace and a sense of humor as she shares her journey of a return to innocence. With soulful southern storytelling, the songs on Nectar showcase Colonna’s singular vocal abilities with a natural simplicity and authenticity.
The album came together after Colonna’s recovery from an eight-month illness, at a point when she was almost ready to give up her music career. The record bares these scars, showing the grace and surrender that went into Colonna surviving and succeeding.
With Wendy’s distinct “smoky, alluring voice” (Austin Chronicle), Nectar has been receiving praise since its release late last year. The San Antonio Express-News has noted the “soulful grit” and “tender-tough abilities” of Wendy’s distinctive southern voice, which the Austin Chronicle describes as “smoky” and “alluring.”
Nectar has found it’s way into the hearts of Austin’s tastemakers, with mentions in the top albums of 2013 in the Austin Chronicle, Austin-American Statesman & more. She was a Wall Street Journal Pick for SXSW 2014 and songs from Nectar have been in spin in Starbucks playlists across the US.
Since the album’s release, Wendy has been featured as the cover story Lagniappe Magazine (LA), Louisiana Jam (LA), Buddy Magazine (TX) and Nightflying (AR). No Depression, Lone Star Magazine and The Huffington Post have published extensive interviews with Wendy about the album and it has been reviewed by some of Americana’s great tastemakers like NineBullets and The Alternate Root. NPR’s acclaimed Beale Street Caravan featured Wendy in the summer of 2014 and Starbucks has been spinning tunes from Nectar in stores across the US.
Colonna grew up in a Southwest Louisiana working class home of Italian and Cajun ancestry and has been performing since 1997. She has released six critically acclaimed studio albums and a live album and DVD recorded in the legendary Antone’s in Austin, Texas.
Since early accolades, such as being named the “Best Singer Songwriter in Austin” by the Austin American-Statesman and called “Best New Artist” by Jody Denberg (formerly KGSR, now KUTX), Wendy has toured nationally and internationally. Colonna recently wrote a song for Coca-Cola’s summer ad-campaign that reached #3 best ad in AdWeek. Also, notably, the City of Austin honored Wendy by proclaiming April 26, 2012 “Wendy Colonna Day.”
On top of keeping a busy schedule, touring the U.S. and internationally, Wendy is also an avid yoga practitioner, athlete and community leader.
Touring the US and internationally as both headliner and support act for great artists like Jeff Buckley, Tony Joe White, Mavis Staples, Trombone Shorty, Los Lobos, Marcia Ball, Asleep at the Wheel, Bob Schneider, Collective Soul, Ed Kowalczyk (Live), Edgar Winter, Delbert McClinton & more.
