Ice and the Sky (La glace et le ciel)
Directed by Luc Jacquet
2015, in French with English subtitles
France
89 minutes
A decade after winning an Academy Award for The March of the Penguins, French filmmaker Luc Jacquet profiles pioneering glaciologist Claude Lorius, now 83 years old.
At the age of 23, Lorius answered an ad for a student to take part in a year-long scientific expedition to Antarctica, a decision that would shape his life.
He began researching in Antarctica in 1957 by measuring carbon dioxide bubbles in ice (some of it 800,000 years old) and was among the first scientists to make the case for global warming.
Lorius eloquently narrates his own story, accompanied by a wealth of archive footage featuring awe-inspiring scenes of the polar terrain. A cautionary look at the impact of global warming, the film also inspires as an ode to the spirit of exploration and adventure.
