Each March 17th for the past 25 years we have worked to bring to Houston a family-friendly celebration of the feast day of Ireland’s patron saint, Saint Patrick.

As seen in USA Today …”One of the Top Ten Places to Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in the USA.”  And recipient of the St. James Gate Perfect Pint Certification (that’s from the makers of Guinness, y’all).

What we celebrate on St. Patrick’s Day is the whole of Celtic culture, and a musical tradition that, over the centuries, has become as much American roots music as bottleneck guitar. The drums of western Africa are what gave American music its rhythm; more often than not, though, the melody is Celtic.

The popularity of Celtic folk music is either a testament to the timeless appeal of these sometimes haunting, sometimes hilarious, sometimes jig-inspiring tunes, or perhaps an argument in favor of the nebulous theory of racial memory.

Celtic blood-ties real, suspected and imagined have given many the impetus to learn the folk-arts of the ancient tribes; a great way to explore Irish music and tradition.

For the celebration, our entire property is covered under a big-top tent and we showcase traditional and contemporary Celtic music and dance inside and outside the Duck throughout the day. There is seating in both areas on a first come – first served basis. .

O’Maoileidigh Irish Dancers
The O’Maoileidigh School of Irish Dance perform throughout the year at events like the International Festival and you can always find us around St. Patrick’s Day at the parade and at the Mucky Duck showing off our steps and our smiles. Once again this year some of our group qualified to compete at the World Championships.

The Irish Session Players
The Session Players will be performing Irish tunes inside the Duck throughout the afternoon and evening.The Mucky Duck incarnation of the Session, if for no other reaon than the frequent participation of younger musicians, gives a very real sense of tradition passed on and history handed down.

Master of Ceremonies and Comic Relief Jim Mackenzie
Jim performs a one man comedy show featuring a variety of skills including but not limited to; juggling, sword swallowing, whip cracking, rope/pole walking, unicycling, music looping, straight jacket escape and good ol’ fun with the audience.

Martin Burniston’s Irish Singalong
Join our resident leprechaun Martin, as he leads the Celtic throngs through some of your favorite Irish tunes and even a limerick or two.
