Catherine Couturier Gallery is delighted to present the work of gallery artist Maggie Taylor, entitled Stranger Things Have Happened. The artist will be in attendance at the opening reception on Saturday, February 27, from 5-7 p.m.

“I create images, and that is much more important to me than explaining what the images mean. There is just no telling what they mean to other people anyway.” Maggie Taylor

Known for her innovative style, Maggie Taylor’s technique for more than twenty years includes the use of a flatbed scanner instead of a traditional camera to capture the objects and photographs she collects from various sources.

In 1996, Taylor first used Adobe Photoshop to manipulate the timelessness of antique portraits by playing on their whimsical nature. She uses background elements to add texture and a sense of space, spontaneously and intuitively creating an ethereal style which resonates a surreal narrative content.

In 2008 Taylor published her version of “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” with 45 illustrations accompanying Lewis Carroll’s original text. Now she is at work on the sequel, “Through the Looking Glass.”

The gallery will also show a selection of Taylor’s vintage daguerreotypes, tintypes, and ambrotypes that are her source materials.

There is no one meaning for any of the images, rather they exist as a kind of visual riddle or open-ended poem, meant to be both playful and provocative.
