Musiqa presents a special Musiqa / CAMH Loft Concert, presented in collaboration with the exhibition Jennie C. Jones – Compilation.
The CAMH Loft Concerts are held within the museum gallery. Join Musiqa and CAMH and hear new classical music selected to compliment the artwork on display.
SCHEDULED PROGRAM:
The concert’s program features works by five leading female composers. The best known of these is Grawemeyer award winner Kaija Saariaho, whose Lohn, a work for soprano and electronics, will be performed by Musiqa’s artist in residence Karol Bennett, along with sound designer Chapman Welch.
Two other works also feature electronics: Eve Beglarian’s I Will Not Be Sad in This World, with flutist Sergio Pallottelli; and Alexandra Gardner’s Electric Blue Pantsuit, featuring violinist Boson Mo.
Pallotelli will also perform Valerie Coleman’s Danza de la Mariposa for solo flute, and the program will be rounded out with electronic works by Jennie C. Jones herself.
The composers featured on this program feature a wide variety of styles: from electronics pioneer Saariaho, to the postminimalism of Beglarian; from Gardner’s self-described “minimal, unexpectedly simple, and surprisingly powerful” music to Coleman’s idiomatic writing for flute (unsurprising, as the composer is a flutist herself and a founding member of the Imani Winds).
Jennie C. Jones’s work bridges the gap between sound and visual art, expressing an avant-garde sensibility in a sort of free-form, jazz-inspired audiovisual spectacle, with a healthy dose of social and political awareness. As an indication of Jones’ versatility, this concert is the first time that Musiqa is able to include music by the featured CAMH artist on its musical program.
This concert is free and open to the public; seating is limited.
