The Night of the Shooting Stars (La note di San Lorenzo)
Directed by Paolo and Vittorio Taviani
1982, in Italian with English subtitles
Italy,105 minutes, DCP
The Night of the Shooting Stars is the Tavianis’ masterpiece.
Based on true incidents from their own childhoods (but told from the perspective of a six-year-old girl), the story is set in the closing days of World War II, in a village at the mercy of retreating Nazis, while the Americans are rumored to be tantalizingly close.
As the losing side grows more desperate, a group of frightened villagers sets off in search of their liberators. They embark on an odyssey that is by turns surreal, suspenseful, brutal, and funny that climaxes in a bloody, chaotic battle.
