Post-film discussion with writer Nick Flynn (in person) and director Hubert Sauper (via Skype).
We Come as Friends is a modern odyssey, a dizzying, science fiction-like journey into the heart of Africa.
As war-ravaged South Sudan claims independence from North Sudan and its brutal President Omar al-Bashir, a tiny, homemade prop plane flies in from France. It is piloted by eagle-eyed documentarian Hubert Sauper (Oscar-nominated for Darwin’s Nightmare), who is mining for stories in a land trapped in the past but careening toward an apocalyptic future.
Chinese oil workers, UN peacekeepers, Sudanese warlords, and American evangelists ironically weave common ground in this striking documentary.
Winner of the Special Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival and the Peace Prize at the Berlin International Film Festival.
“A surreal, moving, infuriating, and persuasive argument that in South Sudan, there’s nothing post about colonialism.” —New York Times
This film includes some scenes of armed conflict with graphic imagery and explicit language.
