Junkyard Mongrels was founded in December 2012 by Ian Brown (guitar/vocals), and Nick Asken (upright bass/vocals). With influences ranging from Punk Rock and Metal to Ol’ School Country and Bluegrass, its hard to pigeon hole them to one certain genre. If you were to ask them, what sort of music they play, the answer would be “Scumgrass”. But make no mistake, they feel right at home with anything from Roots and Americana to classic American swing and Rockabilly. In early 2013 they moved to Austin, Tx. where they brought on Mandolin player Erin McNeeley and Washboard player Nic Butts, completing their sound. But they’re also happy to bring on a fiddle player from time to time. In 2014 they released their first full length Self Titled album, which can be procured at their shows.
“The Junkyard Mongrels function like a well oiled machine on stage, but you’d never be able to tell from listening to them or watching their performance. They swing and sway like a booze soaked, mangy dog. Their tight performance is undercover beneath a raucous tension that anything could go off the rails at any time. It’s that old fashioned Wednesday night prayer meeting vibe that gives them their appeal. The music draws upon rockabilly, country, folk, and blues – all the classic Americana you know and love – but their energy is somehow more pure than the average band that tries to approach these genres.
They’re pure early 20th century showmanship. They’ve got the spirit of their forefathers who invented this stuff in the deep south all those years ago. They can make you sweat and flail and they can make you slow dance and two step. Their most pure ability though is their command over their audience’s emotions. You want to dance and you want to sing along, whether you know the words or not. They just light a fire in your soul. If you ever get a chance to see them, don’t miss it. It’s a barn stomping affair when they play, and they truly tear the house down.” – Corey Deiterman, Houston Press
Cottonwood Blossom (Houston, TX)

Southern roots style music with a mixture of outlaw country, bluegrass, and rocakabilly.
We grew up listening to country. We got older and started playing metal, thrash, and punk. We got older still and now we want to try our hand at country. Most notably members of Cottonwood Blossom are in Deadhorse and Pasadena Napalm Division( as well as many others.)
Cottonwood Blossom is old western slang for someone who was hung from a tree.
