It was an extraordinary step for Lax, who entered an arranged marriage to a Hasidic Jewish man in 1975 and lived a strict Orthodox lifestyle for decades, giving birth to seven children. As Maggie Galehouse reports in the Houston Chronicle, Lax started questioning both her faith and her sexuality after taking creative writing classes at the University of Houston. On Wednesday, September 2, Lax will be at Brazos Bookstore to read from her new memoir, Uncovered: How I Left Hasidic Life and Finally Came Home.

September 2 at 7 p.m. Brazos Bookstore, 2421 Bissonnet St. 713-523-0701. brazosbookstore.com
