Classical Theatre Company presents The Birds, April 6 – 24, 2016. (Previews April 6 & 7; Opening Friday, April 8).
Not since 2009’s Antigone has CTC produced an ancient Greek play, and never before a Greek comedy.
The Birds is one of the most revered comedies written by the great Greek playwright Aristophanes. As all of his comedies are, The Birds is thick with commentary on the sociopolitical environment of the time, and the relative absurdity of human nature.
“Aristophanes provides his views on religion and criticism of the governmental construct that he saw around him. Needless to say, his views and the debates around which they center are still topics of discussion today,” says CTC chief John Johnston.
“Any play where you’ve got a flock of talking birds setting themselves up to be the gods of men is going to draw some laughs. I’m really excited to see what [director] Philip Hays does with this zany script.”
This production is to be directed by CTC Company Artist Philip Hays with scenic design by CTC Company Artist Ryan McGettigan and costumes by Macy Perrone.
