Texas Gallery is delighted to present a new series of photographs by William Wegman titled Good Dogs on Nice Furniture.
It is the notable New York based artist’s most recent series of photographs of his clan of Weimaraners. The photographs are single and multiple images of the dogs posing on classic pieces of modern furniture by Charles and Ray Eames and George Nelson.
As humorous as the dogs are in Wegman’s work, the photographs are composed in a formal manner both as to structure and subject matter in these new works.
The artist exploits the intensely saturated colors of the medium of the pigment photographic print, as well as highlighting the vibrant colors of the furniture itself.
In this exhibition, Wegmen, a prodigious artist who works in various media, refines the ideas that began with the participation of Man Ray, his first Weimaraner, in his ground-breaking video work of the 1970s. Later, dogs appeared in altered photos, large-scale Polaroid photos, and in children’s books and videos.
The quality of this recent work with the dogs as subject matter suggests less a narrative than a more surreal state of affairs.
Wegman’s first exhibition at the Texas Gallery was in 1972, featuring photographs and videos. Since then, multiple shows atthe gallery have featured all aspects of his work, most recently in 2013, Photographs and Drawings from the 70s..
A survey show of Wegman’s work titled William Wegman: Funney/Strange opened at the Brooklyn Museum of Art in 2006, and traveled to several venues in the United States. More recently, the exhibition, Hello Nature, was seen at Bowdoin College, New Brunswick ME, and traveled to a second venue at Artipelag, Stockholm in 2012.
A recent exhibition of paintings titled Artists Including Me: Wiliam Wegman was at the Krannert Art Museum, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and will re-open in October 2015 at the San Jose Museum of Art, San Jose CA.
A monograph on Wegman’s postcard paintings will be published in 2016 by Abrams. In the spring of 2016, William Wegman will be a guest of Glasstire’s Off Road series of artist’s talks in Houston.
