Join Houston Center for Photography (HCP) for a free screening of Mats Bigert and Lars Bergstrom’s film, The Last Supper, exploring the discrepancy between the historical meaning and contemporary use of the tradition on death row.
The last supper has been given to prisoners facing execution as long as the punishment of the death pentaly has existed. Stemming from the funeral rite tradition of providing the deceased with sustanance for his journey into the afterlife, today’s ritual of feeding the condemned may seem absurd.
The film mixes documentary material with sculptural installations and animated graphics. The main character is the former death row chef Brian Price, who reconstructs one of the 200 final meals that he prepared during his time as inmate in Huntsville State Prison, Texas, US.
The film was shot during 2004 in the US, Philippines, Thailand, Japan, Kenya, South Africa and Sweden.
The Last Supper will be shown on the last day of the exhibition, Amy Elkins: Black is the Day, Black is the Night & Parting Words.
