McGonigel’s Mucky Duck presents Julia EngelJulia Sings for her Supper.

Your favorite singing waitress is back!

Come here Julia Engel sing everything from opera to Edith Piaff to contemporary American songs while Tyler Tucker tickles the ivories. The beginning of the summer means that audition season is right around the corner, so come on out and help support a young singer’s love of music from Mozart to Menotti and beyond!

Soprano Julia Engel has been called “a gloriously pert Norina” and “beguiling of voice” by the Houston Press in 2013 for her portrayals of Norina in Donizetti’s Don Pasquale and Nannetta in Verdi’s Falstaff, both with Opera in the Heights (Houston, TX).

Ms. Engel was a Young Artist for Opera Theater of Pittsburgh during the summer of 2013, singing Olympia in Jacques Offenbach’s The Tales of Hoffmann-Retold.

While in Pittsburgh she was also a part of Mozart Week which involved multiple concerts for audience members to hear standard repertoire and rarely performed pieces of music written by Mozart and his family members. Ms. Engel had the good fortune to be a part of the CoOperative Program’s winter concerts in January of 2013, singing Zerlina in Mozart’s Don Giovanni, and covering Musetta in Puccini’s La Bohème.

The spring of 2014 brought forth opportunities to sing in Metamorphosis Opera Theater’s inaugural production of Mitridate, re di Ponto in the role of Ismene, and her debuts with the Virtuosi of Houston Orchestra and the Minnesota Philharmonic Orchestra. In summer of 2014, Julia covered Zerbinetta for Kingwood Summer Opera’s production of Ariadne auf Naxos.

Julia played the roles of the Dew Fairy, Mother, and Witch in Engelbert Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel in 2012 for HGOco’s Opera to Go! program, touring around the state of Texas and performing 80+ shows.

She has participated as a Young Artist with Opera Theater of Pittsburgh (2013), The CoOperative Program at Westminster (Princeton, NJ – 2012), Le chiavi di Bel Canto (Houston, TX – 2011), and Glensheen Opera (Duluth, MN – 2010). A frequent competitor in vocal competitions, Julia is most recently a 2nd place winner in the Young Texas Artists Competition (Conroe, TX – 2014), a 2nd place winner in the Concerto Competition for the University of Houston (2011), a finalist in the Lois Alba Aria Competition (2011) and a 1st place winner for the upper midwest District NATSAA Competition (2010).

Julia received her Master of Music degree from the University of Houston, where she performed Sophie in Der Rosenkavalier, Nannetta in Falstaff, Madame Herz in The Impresario, and Queen of the Night in The Magic Flute.

She received her Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Minnesota and performed Königen der Nacht in Die Zauberflöte, Karolka in Jenufa (in English), and Suor Dolcina in Suor Angelica.

She is currently studying with soprano Cynthia Clayton.

Julia has an extensive dance background, with 11 years of classes in ballet, tap, jazz, and lyrical/modern. She also has 8 ½ years of experience in concert band on the flute and 6 years on the piccolo.

The Montrose Management District
board workshop meeting scheduled for April 3
has been postponed indefinitely.
