5 Can’t Miss Events for October
October is here! Thoughts are turning to pumpkins, their namesake lattes, and all the spookiest and most fun parts of fall. With food and fun in mind (and a healthy dose of costumed revelry), we’ve rounded up five can’t-miss events in Montrose this month.
October 5th-8th: The 51st Original Greek Festival
The Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral is kicking off October with their 51st annual Original Greek Festival. Chock full of great food, drink and culture, this event will start your October off right. Get your fill of souvlaki, spanakopitas, and baklava (plus a bevy of other Greek options), grab yourself a beer or a coffee, and head to one of the many scheduled celebrations of Greek dancing, music and crafts. Opa!
October 8th: The Glamour and Romance of Oscar de la Renta at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston
Fashionistas all over Houston are anticipating the opening of this exhibit. Featuring almost seventy ensembles from throughout his career, this retrospective should provide plenty of style inspiration (and maybe even Halloween costume ideas). After an expansive display of ensembles, the exhibit ends with photographs of de la Renta’s designs on dignitaries and stars like Amal Clooney, Laura Bush, and Kirsten Dunst. Can’t make it October 8th? Catch it any time through January 28th, 2018.
October 12th-15th: The Houston Italian Festival
October is a month for celebrating culture and food in Montrose, with the Houston Italian Festival just a week after the Original Greek. Fans of pasta, wine and Italian culture will delight in the options available at this four-day long celebration. Classic cars and sidewalk art will also be on display, and both a grape stomping and pasta-eating contest will be available for those who like to celebrate with a little friendly competition.
October 28th: The 11th Annual Montrose Crawl
Everyone’s favorite neighborhood pub crawl returns on October 28th, with plenty of costumed fun. With 12 stops along Westheimer, and prizes for costumes at each one, there is a strong incentive to break out your best costumes for a chance to win. Best of all, a portion of the night’s drink proceeds benefit the Houston Area Women’s Center. Celebrating Halloween and giving back at the same time? It’s a BOOtiful thing.
October 31st: Numbers Halloween
If a weekend pub crawl isn’t for you, Montrose’s longstanding dance club Numbers is here to help. Their popular Halloween party will be on the holiday itself (a Tuesday), and will feature cash prizes for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd best costumes. If you’ve never stopped in, this might be the best time to visit this neighborhood landmark.
