Homeless Gay Kids-Houston Building A Drop-In Center In Montrose For At-Risk LGBT Youth

By | September 24, 2015

HGK-HA recent story on Houston Public Media announced the formation of a local nonprofit geared to help runaway and homeless minors from the LGBT community. Homeless Gay Kids-Houston, or HGK-H, will address gay teenagers “who lose the support of their families” and “often turn to desperate measures for survival.”

Current nonprofits and churches that offer help for the LGBT homeless population in Houston “can be inconsistent and difficult to rely on,” and efforts are often targeted to young adults as opposed to teens. Minors — by law — are not allowed to sign themselves into a shelter, so HGK-H will attempt to fill that niche.

The group is building a “seven-day-a-week drop-in center in Montrose where teens and young adults of any sexual orientation can get a meal, along with connections to counseling, health care, job placement, legal services, and, most importantly, help to rebuild the trust they lost when they were forced out of their homes.”

The organization is currently seeking volunteers with experience in counseling and other areas of expertise.

Please contact me with service opportunities. I am female, 45, straight, and have tried to help when I can, where I can. I lived through the 1990s/2000s as a member of the Montrose community ( who helped me without thought) and the real daily struggle faced by the residents therein. I want to help. I am currently unemployed due to sexual harassment / retaliation (at my age!) and would love to assist any way I can.
